The Danger of “I’ll Do it Tomorrow”
If you’ve not read the book “The Slight Edge” by Jeff Olson, you must read it.
For one thing, it may change your belief about what it takes to reach your goals. It’s not about taking big, daunting actions. It’s about taking small, simple actions and repeating them consistently.
The book also talks about the danger of putting things off until tomorrow. Small, simple actions will only lead you to success if you can be consistent with them on a daily basis.
HOW SUCCESSFUL PEOPLE OPERATE
Successful people do the simple little things consistently, for a long enough period of time to get the desired effect.
The key word is “consistently.” They don’t just do it once or twice and then let it fall by the wayside.
Chris and Susan Beesley work on their business every single day. Most people would think it’ll do no harm to take just one day off here and there, but they’re wrong.
Chris and Susan know that if they take just one day off, then they’ll see a small dip in a few weeks’ or months’ time. The more days they take off, the bigger the dip. They don’t want that.
Susan makes sure she sends an email to her list every day. She feels guilty if she runs out of time, even just for one day.
If you find yourself running out of time, it’s tempting to say “I’ll do that tomorrow.” But however small, there’s a consequence to putting it off. Instead, just do it right now.
HOW UNSUCCESSFUL PEOPLE OPERATE
The actions that lead to success are simple and easy actions. But then why isn’t everyone successful?
Jim Rohn said, “What is easy to do is also easy not to do.”
While successful people have simple little disciplines they do daily, unsuccessful people make the decision not to do it because they believe it doesn’t matter. How much difference could it make to skip just one day?
Imagine you have two people who are both healthy. One of them continues to eat healthy every day, while the other starts eating a Big Mac every day.
After just one day, you won’t notice a difference. But if you extend it out over a long period of time, the healthy eater will have the longer and better life.
Don’t be tempted to say “I’ll do it tomorrow.” The more you get into the habit of using that excuse, the easier it’ll get and the further you’ll push your goals away.
